Abstract: amid the changes in careers and labor relations in today′s workplace, (balassiano and costa, 2006; dutra, 2010), a new generation of professionals is entering the job market. this generation has been characterized by the non-academic literature as significantly different from its predecessors (alsop, 2008; munro, 2009). however, scientific studies have also suggested that such differences could be much less pronounced (cennamo and gardner, 2008; wong, gardiner, lang et al., 2008). the changing nature of careers and the entrance of this new generation into the job market have motivated this study, which aims to examine the expectations of young workers regarding the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards they wish to attain in the workplace through interviews with undergraduate students enrolled in management programs offered by private universities in rio de janeiro. as they addressed an open question regarding what they wished to find in the organizations, young adults ranging from 20 to 28 years old revealed their dreams and concerns. the analysis of the reports suggests that there is more in common between members of generation y and its predecessors than the non-academic literature would have us believe. the observations of this study support the notion that young employees may establish psychological contracts that favor pleasure, freedom and social involvement. on the other hand, new and conventional expectations seem to coexist, since such contemporary concerns come together with aspirations longed for by previous generations, reinforcing the perception that there are work-related expectations that remain, in spite of objective changes in the productive sphere.

Abstract: this study investigates work relations and career perspectives of it professionals in the information technology service industry. the research is based on the case of executives, managers and technical professionals which work in a large brazilian company that provides consulting and systems development and implementation services, and reveals a considerable vulnerability in the relationship between the company and such professionals. the human resources business model adopted seems to impose restrictions to the development of the professionals, consequently limiting their future performance, and concurring for the continuing devaluation of it as a profession. the sustainability of such a model is discussed, given its long term risks for the companies' service quality and competitiveness, as well as its implications for the attractiveness of information technology as a career.

Abstract: This study investigates work relations and career perspectives of IT professionals in the information technology service industry. The research is based on the case of executives, managers and technical professionals which work in a large Brazilian company that provides consulting and systems development and implementation services, and reveals a considerable vulnerability in the relationship between the company and such professionals. The human resources business model adopted seems to impose restrictions to the development of the professionals, consequently limiting their future performance, and concurring for the continuing devaluation of IT as a profession. The Influence of Emotions on the Endowment Effect

Abstract: According to prospect theory, individuals with loss aversion would tend to attribute a higher value to a good once their ownership over it had been established. Such tendency would cause reluctance to trade the good, even if an equivalent one were offered in exchange. Thaler (1980) named this phenomenon endowment effect. In this article, we present a review of the literature about the topic, which has been one of the most investigated themes in the relatively recent eld of behavioral nance. Adopting Knetsch’s research model (1989), we conducted two experiments in order to investigate the phenomenon in a Brazilian sample, speci cally testing the in uence of emotions on its manifestation. The results replicate ndings for the endowment effect, and suggest that negative emotions attenuate the observed effects. Positive emotions, however, did not have any detectable in uence over the phenomenon.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the characteristics of professional ethics investigations with denouncement of a medical error and to discuss the importance of medical education for its prevention. the main article of the brazilian code of medical ethics characterizing the medical error is article 29. in this descriptive study we reviewed all investigations carried out in the regional council of medicine of the state of bahia (cremeb) from 2000 to 2004. from the 372 doctors investigated by the cremeb during the period, 42.7% (n = 159) were denounced according to article 29. from these, most were male (78.6%) and the medium age was of 44 years. the most frequent specialties were: gynecology-obstetrics (24.8%), general surgery (9.4%) and anesthesiology (7.4%). most of the accusations referred to medical errors occurred in public services (80.1%, n = 109) and were related to surgical interventions (66.0%, n = 97). negligence was identified in 67.3% (n = 107) of the accusations, imprudence in 23.3% (n = 37) and inability in 8.8% (n = 14). only 23.9% (n = 38) were considered guilty as charged while 31.4% (n = 50) were absolved due to lack of proofs and 44.0% (n = 70) for proven innocence. we conclude that medical errors, mostly due to negligence, are a frequent cause of accusations against doctors at cremeb, a fact showing the need of this subject being more discussed and valued in the medicine course.

Abstract: this study investigated the acquisition of repeated shifts of simple discriminations (rssd) in three infants. animated images were presented on a touch sensitive screen. the procedure started off with a two-choice simple discrimination training (sd) with shifts in the stimulus function until all stimuli had functioned once as s+ and once as s-. afterwards, all the three stimuli were presented in the same trial completing a rssd cycle. two of the infants learned the rssd with the two-choice procedure and one infant learned the sd with two stimuli. the replacement of the stimulus sets throughout the training, characterized as a multiple exemplar training, seems to have contributed to the infants' engagement in the task as well as to the acquisition of the discriminations.

Abstract: the study aimed to evidence the incorporation of the foucaultian framework in the scientific production of the graduate program in nursing of the federal university of santa catarina. it is a qualitative study using documentary research. the research source was the program's database of theses and dissertations. we identified 13 studies that used michel foucault. the analysis of the studies was made in two stages: classifying the works in relation to the objects of inquiry, and organizing the material from the data in the studies, giving place to the categories: why michel foucault?; the question of power in nursing studies, and archeology and genealogy in foucaultian studies. this referential view points a new to look towards diverse fields of research in nursing.

Abstract: El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la utilización del marco teórico de Foucault en la producción del científica del Programa de Posgrado en Enfermería de la Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina. Es un estudio cualitativo que utiliza la investigación documental. La fuente de investigación fue el banco de Tesis y de Disertaciones del programa. Se identificaron 13 estudios que utilizaron a Michel Foucault como marco teórico referencial. El análisis de los estudios se realizó en dos etapas: la clasificación de las obras en relación con los objetos de investigación, y su organización surgiendo las siguientes categorías temáticas: Por qué Michel Foucault?; La cuestión del poder en los estudios de enfermería y, Arqueología y genealogía en los estudios foucaultianos. El uso del marco teórico de Foucault se ala una nueva mirada con respecto a la investigación en el campo de la enfermería.

Abstract: The diagnosis of liver cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C has not always been easy, since the gold standard method is the liver biopsy, which is an invasive procedure with interobserver accuracy problems and there have been reports of complications including records of deaths due to hemoperitoneum. Cirrhosis changes the prognosis of the subject with hepatitis C and requires a different clinical management. This study aimed to identify clinical and laboratory variables associated with the diagnosis of cirrhosis in the ultrasonography of patients infected with hepatitis C. In a case-control study, we evaluated 70 cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis C compared to a control group of 70 non-cirrhotic people with positive HCV. The results showed, through logistic regression analysis, that the variables blood donor and professional athlete, adjusted for alcohol consumption, showed OR 0.24 and 0.18, with p values of 0.044 and 0.035, respectively. We conclude that the diagnosis of cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C remains challenging, but the patients with the condition of blood donor or professional athlete prove to be less likely to cirrhosis in ultrasonography in the initial consultation.

Abstract: with the advent of globalization comes a new form of coexistence between societies, the possibility of which has helped to generate a tangle of cross-cultural field and allowed the establishment of universal values in local sites. this context coupled with mass culture promoted brands to produce complex and global cultural symbols. inspired by michel foucault's archaeological project, we elected a global brand to undergo a photo-ethnographic case study of mundane daily practices. this process project has enabled us to perform the analysis through an ordering, definition and description work, developed within the discursive field, allowing the results to reveal enunciative descriptions guided by brand marketing practices. descriptions revealed functions and their relations have allowed us to decipher the rules under which they were governed. the analysis revealed the relational threshold between global and local cultures and allowed us to unveil the links on this discursive web, allowing the understanding of how a transnational brand is established in a local culture reproducing a global culture. in this sense, we point out some ways to reflect on contemporary western societies.
